Mavic Air Full Review – Should I BUY or WAIT?

Mavic Air Full Review – Should I BUY or WAIT?

I have been flying the Mavic Air for 3 months now so I have some pretty good experience with the the Mavic Air. In
this video we will look at the pros and cons and see what works and what doesn’t
work for me. This might help you to decide if you want to purchase the
Mavic Air or not. Before we get to that, let’s roll that intro. Do you want to
improve your video skills learn about ewheels then consider subscribing to my
weekly tips, test and tutorials. As I mentioned in the intro I have been flying the Mavic Air
for 3 months now, so I have a pretty extensive experience what works and what
doesn’t so this is going to be my honest unbiased review with the pros and cons
for this machine. If you don’t know the Mavic Air then just let’s recap the
specs we basically don’t need to do this but that gives me a chance to show off
my new auto dolly. Foldable and portable 3 axis gimbal with a 4k camera panoramas
up to 32 megapixel 3 directional environment sensing front rear bottom
camera and sensors 18 minutes of real flight time all right so let’s start by
listing the things that I like about the metagame I like the way that they mount
filters on the manager I like the screw solution where there Phylis actually
threaded onto the lens that makes the solution much more secure and safe to
use it’s built like a tank it’s a really solid construction and they even though
I actually managed to crash it a few times nothing has happened to the
machine and especially the kimberley construction is really good especially
compared to the metal I like the fly mode convoy I think that is a pretty and
neat a starter kit where you get more or less everything that you need you might
be able to pick up an additional filter say but apart from that it’s a pretty
good day startup based solution the battery in the remote seems a pretty
strong it can easily out last three batteries and so this is a really really
satisfying that you don’t run out of to use on a your flight time can always be
discussed and we offer one more than their what
but with an average of 18 minutes that this is a quite sufficiently I’m really
impressed with the camera quality this little drone produces some amazing
pictures despite it has a small sensor and it goes without saying that the
phone fax is brilliant it’s nice and compact and it fits easily in your
backpack having obstacle avoidance there in the back of the drone that is simply
brilliant and it’s very very needed especially if you do these pull away
shots and there when you’re concentrated and looking on the screen and you don’t
see obstacles behind them I really like to compact the sign of the remote I
think it’s a pretty smart then you could take off the joysticks and then tuck
them away inside the remote the gimbal cover that’s also a huge improvement
that’s pretty easy to mount and then even let you have a external ending
fillers on while a you store the device also I like the building a key buy
storage Jim I don’t use it very often but I had a few times where I actually
ran out of space on my SD card and they were pretty handy to have some
additional storage inside the drum by the way if you knew had then consider
subscribing it so you don’t miss out on my weekly tips testing to to us but how
is it in real life let’s look at the what I don’t like about the mam again
this is likely the part of this review that you have been waiting for because
this will influence your buying decision if you want it or not remember to unfold
the landing gear / antennas to be perfectly honest sometimes I actually
forget this part and there the problem with that is that the camera actually
touches the ground when the gimbal initializes so this is a not good that’s
been said and written a lot about the connection that there the mammogram was
released with Wi-Fi instead of focusing and they I have to admit that the the
connection is not as stable as we are used to where it takes a bit of getting
used to and you sometimes lose the signal to the drone and it’s very
sensitive to the direction of the antenna that it’s pointed in there
right direction so it can be handled and it has not failed me yet but it is scary
when you start to lose connection to your drunk
despite the manager actually handles high weight there pretty well I’ve seen
it under these conditions that there the cable can be knocked out of there
leveling and I really miss my exposure conversation will on the right side of
the remote I’ve lately experienced a few bucks in the TDI call for interface
aware for example the histogram is enabled under the gear settings but not
shown on the front page then you have to go in and disable it and enable it again
even though I’ve been doing it many many times I still mess up the folding of the
drone every time that I only it’s not natural to me it’s a minor thing
precedent it’s still kind of amazing that yeah I can’t get it right
the MAV again has a much higher top speed than the medical but for some
reason there when you accelerate from zero it feels much more noise could be a
problem I don’t know if this the high pitch sound or what it is people I had
people approach me saying in that this is a really noisy flow which I haven’t
really experienced before with some of the other DJI products that I’ve been
flying the charger that is a pretty smart but it only changes one battery at
a time and that could be a problem if you’re in a hurry and then you need a
full set of batteries I would say maybe get is a pretty sensitive to magnetic
interference and I’ve been asking all the time to a calibrate my compass but
you need to be careful here because if this is being caused by being too mean
to metal objects this is a wrong information so I try to move away from
the spot where you start the aircraft and reboot it and see if the error
message disappears you don’t want to calibrate your compass based on this
interference because that would make it all wrong when you airborne the position
of the SD card slot is pretty annoying and it’s kind of fiddly to get it in now
there’s no doubt that the manager is a pimp down version of the probe because
there’s a taking a little bit of everything away from it it has less
flight modes less color profiles and etc a cool example is waypoints they left
pan out but that can luckily be compensated by using third-party
software from Li Jie I don’t like small converters because they get lost all the
time I don’t understand why they didn’t use the same interface in their them
remote as in the drone the drone has said USB C and the remote has micro USB
someone argued that they missed the LCD screen on the remote and I tend to agree
because this is really nice to have that kind of information on the screen
especially if your connection link is getting a bit flaky so now you know what
I like and what I don’t like about the memory yeah but what I still buy it with
the knowledge that I have today if you want to travel light you won’t be
disappointed about this phone it packs a tremendous amount of the value for the
money that day you spent you will have plenty of camera power in there your
backpack in so you could do whatever you want underneath so is this the first
drone that I ever had if that depends I was also pretty happy about my merit Pro
that is a pretty decent drone and still is but the MAV again does have some
advantages that play in its favor especially the cable design and there
the general build quality that’s way more robust than the medical I do have
to say if I had to do drone operation say for a living I would have to operate
to a drone with a better camera it’s not bad but if you want to do it
professionally it’s not up to scratch so bottom line it’s a yes for me for buying
the mat again because it’s a fun drone and I think you will have a lot of fun
with it especially for recreational fliers like given myself do you agree or
disagree with the points that I made in this video drop them in the comment
section below or head on to the probe we love Facebook group and consider the
discussion with me and some of the other suppliers just as a reminder there’s
plenty of tutorials about the manager how to get the best out of it there here
on the channel did you see the video where I showed the settings here for
taking the perfect photo if you miss that one you can access it by pressing
temple thank you for watching and see you on the next one

Hello I always follow you from Italy, you are very competent and your's air settings were essential for me after the purchase, I confirm everything that you said, excluding the quality of the camera, essential use in D-Cinelike, in normal too much contrast and it is not too sharp, I come from MI Drone 4k and shooting in normal and sharpness were higher.

Thanks for your review, pros and cons are well pointed. I agree, the Air is possible the #1 travelling drone – foldable with a really good camera at this price level. And the best camera is the one you have with you. I am not sure if I would prefer a Pro, because of the better camera.
You can fly six batteries (warning at 30%) with the remote. I have got a warning from the remote at the last battery. And yes, it is a tank, very durable.
I am waiting for low-noise-props, the sound is awful. But you can hear the Air if you lost visibility 😉 My wish (for most drones) is a customisable RTH height, down to 3-4 meters, especially for flying in the woods. And, the Air needs to have a Ground-Distance-Control in flight, depending on the terrain, like the Pro has. But I think, DJI won't fulfill all these wishes with a software update 🙁 .

    Keep up the good work!

Your observations are right on. I'm a new flyer but a lifelong photographer so I'm still after 3 months getting used to flying my first drone. It's great as an entry level drone and I can see where a camera that can't be zoomed or focused would be a problem if using the drone for professional purposes. My biggest complaint…the location of the removable SD card, it's a real pain to remove and put back in and it will only be a matter of time before the little cover flap gets broken off.

I did hear that any camera settings you set up yourself wil then reset to standard if you use any of the quick shots. Ive not tried it out to see if thats true but its a bit annoying if it is. Keep up the good work

Thanks for the great video! As a newbie, I have a question in regards to using the remote controller; I understand when the right joystick is pushed up with the camera facing you the Mavic Air will move away from you. If you pull down, it will come back to you. Left is left and right is right. Now my question; If the Mavic Air camera is away from you does the joysticks act in an opposite manner? Example; down is forward, up is back towards you, left is right, right is left? I can't find any info. on this anywhere. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you, Ray

Spot on really, good review. Another thing I don’t like is the poor manual, I wish it would cover all the gimbal settings, half the users (me included) won’t have a clue what Yaw, brake & sensitivity means, I learnt some of those from your videos.

To me, the HUGE failing is the fact that the GPS Exif data is essentially useless… An awful drone for mapping. Could be easily fixed with a software update, but I'm not holding my breath…

I've been watching your videos for a while and think they're great. I really like this review. That said, I have a few comments.

I'm not sure I agree with you about mounting a small screen on the RC because I suspect that would noticeably increase the price. I think it would be good if DJI offered a range of RCs at different price points – a more expensive one would have a built in screen.

Also, why do you say "this is wrong information" about magnetic interference? The drone error message says "Move aircraft or calibrate…"

You also say if you did drone operations you would want a drone with a better camera. However, in that case you could lose some of the key advantages of the Air: It's small size, durability, and price point.

Mavic pro Yep it's a 2.2 aperture. better in low-light than the MAVIC AIR at 2.8, but a lower aperture does cause that portrait mode effect probably why not has wide angle and tap to focus to compensate.. so you have complete control..

I'm also willing to bet he wasn't caring about the settings for the video he was just demonstrating
    Indoor flight…

There's always a trade-off bigger drones that are louder and more obtrusive not as portable have bigger better cameras with adjustable apertures

Small the Drone usually the less professional features more portable less expensive cameras

Me personally I purchased PHANTOM 4 PRO, MAVIC PRO, and MAVIC AIR.

I ENDED UP KEEPING THE MAVIC PRO AFTER TRYING THEM ALL FOR 7 DAYS !

Yes the Phantom 4 had a better camera ( WAY TOO LOUD, BULKY WHAT'S THE POINT OF HAVING THIS DRONE IF YOU'RE NOT EXCITED ABOUT CARRYING IT AROUND TO GET FOOTAGE) the MAVIC AIR was more portable ( but way too loud and transmission signal in urban areas unreliable and sucked) the camera was continuously oversaturated. And as Captain drone has shown the mavic pro is just as good as the air when it comes to the camera and has a better Shopper lens. FLIGHT TIME NOT GOOD.

THE MAVIC PRO (HAD THE BEST VIDEO SIGNAL TRANSMISSION IN RANGE, I COULD GET ALMOST THE SAME RESULTS AS THE PHANTOM 4 WITH THE CAMERA IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING PRE AND POST PRODUCTION) love the portability, the size was perfect can handle the wind better, good flight time, tons of professional camera features, smooth and reliable Workhorse. I LOVE THE CONTROLLER YOU DON'T EVEN NEED THE PHONE TO FLY IT. You don't think having the information on the controller is a big deal until you've tried them both.

Sorry but the MAVIC PRO and the MAVIC AIR I RETURNED THE AIR as you can see in my previous review in your comments..

THE MAVIC AIR IS NOT MORE ROBUST THAN THE MAVIC PRO THE PRO IS STRONGER AND BETTER BUILT OTHER THAN THE GIMBAL!!!

As CAPTAIN DRONE already proved the MAVIC PRO actually has a little bit better camera or just as good…..

Love my Pro it's a mavic Pro for a reason

Excellent presentation. Everything about this drone looks pretty darn good, except what your saying about the reception cutting in and out sometimes. I guess they all could do this, but like you say, it's scary, if you think you'll lose control completely. I'm wondering if one of the more powerful antennas like the Maxx could really help that. I know Drone world has that bundle or the add on. Good review, and I'm still thinking about everything. Marc.

Agree to this. The range issues is the killer for me. Which is why i have been researching about range extenders for almost 1 month now and still cant get a conclusion whether i go for it or not. I live in a very urban area so there's a lot of wifi noise which bugs me a lot.

Here's my requirement for me to buy a drone. I had requirements before I bought my apple watch and waiting for it was the best thing I did.

    1. Battery life has to be for more than 2 hours. 30 mins? I take 30 mins to make ramen lol
    2. Cost has to be Maximum $500

    3. Better sensors and range up to 5-6 miles
    4. Can be controlled entirely with the iPhone
    5. 16 gb + storage
