Justice Kagan on Cameras on the Court

Justice Kagan on Cameras on the Court

IT IS CERTAINLY TRUE TODAY. YET IT IS ALSO THE LEAST UNDERSTOOD.

I HOPE THAT IS NOT RELATED. [LAUGHTER] I HOPE NOT, TO. IF THEY KNEW MORE ABOUT US,

[LAUGHTER] THEY MAY DISLIKE THE SMART. THEY WOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU IF IT WOULD ALLOW CAMERAS IN THE COURTROOM AS WE HAVE HERE. WOULD THAT BE A GOOD IDEA? WITH THE LIGHT GLARING IN MY EYE RIGHT NOW, CLEARLY, NO. I HAVE SAID BEFORE THAT I THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA.

IN THIS, I DIFFER FROM SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES. IN THIS LAST YEAR, I HAVE COME

00:00:44,000 –>00:00:43,999
BETTER TO UNDERSTAND THE OPPOSITE POSITION. I GUESS THE REASON THAT I THOUGHT — I CAME TO THIS VIEW WHEN I WAS SOLICITOR GENERAL. I WAS SITTING THERE WATCHING CASE AFTER CASE AFTER CASE. THIS IS AN UNBELIEVABLE COURT TO WATCH ACTUALLY. THIS WAS THE COURT BEFORE I GOT ONTO IT. EVERYBODY WAS SO PREPARED, SO SMART, SO OBVIOUSLY DEEPLY

00:01:13,000 –>00:01:12,999
CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING TO THE RIGHT ANSWER. I THOUGHT IF EVERYBODY COULD SEE THIS, IT WOULD MAKE PEOPLE FEEL SO GOOD ABOUT THIS BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT AND HOW IT WAS OPERATING TO AND I THOUGHT IT WAS SUCH A SHAME, ACTUALLY, THAT ONLY 200 PEOPLE A DAY CAN GET TO SEE IT AND THEN A BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE CAN READ ABOUT IT. READING ABOUT IT IS NOT THE SAME EXPERIENCE. IT IS ACTUALLY SEEING IT. IT IS AN INCREDIBLE COURT THE COURT THAT I WATCHED APPEARED THE LEVEL OF PREPARATION AND

ENCASEDNESS AND INTELLIGENCE AND REAL CONCERN.
53
00:01:52,000 –>00:01:51,999
I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD THING. SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES DISAGREE. THE REASON THEY DISAGREE IS BECAUSE THEY ARE WORRIED THE THAT WOULD CHANGE. THEY WORRY THAT, IF YOU PUT CAMERAS IN THERE, EVERYBODY WILL START PLAYING FOR THE CAMERAS. THE ACTUAL THING THAT IS SO GOOD ABOUT THE INSTITUTION WILL

00:02:14,000 –>00:02:13,999
DIMINISH. IT IS A FAIR POINT. I THINK I AM STILL COMING OUT WITH TRUST THAT WE WOULD CONTINUE TO DO THE SAME THING AND THAT LAWYERS WOULD CONTINUE TO DO THE SAME THING. BUT I AND STAND THE CONCERN. IN THE SPIRIT OF GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE COURT WORKS, I WONDER IF YOU CAN TAKE A MINUTE TO TALK TO US ABOUT HOW THE COURT DECIDES, PARTICULARLY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE

Canada has had cameras in its Supreme Court for many years now. Every concern that Elena Kagan brought up has not happened.

All its resulted in is Supreme Court hearings being played on our Canadian version of C-SPAN after midnight as a way to fill air time when Parliamentary hearings aren't on….

Ironic. She wants cameras in the Supreme Court, your name is 'iwillspyonyou', and you dislike her. Lol. A bit of humor for the day I guess.

Not only would the justices be playing with them the media too would by selectively covering a pretty white woman like Amanda Knox who gets a $4M book deal. If she were a Chinse woman that would be nada. So, cameras in the courtroom actually promotes INEQUALITY! Justice is supposed to be blind.

Wow; this video is great food for thought; it is a privilege to have Justice Kagan share her thoughts with us. I can tell SCOUTS justices have built professional relationships that go much deeper than what we are previewed to; there is understandable concern for disruption in these bonds that took years to form, and are very deer to the justices. Nevertheless, when totality of the circumstances are evaluated, government transparency is paramount; and I pray SCOTUS will agree – please think of the people.
